What Is A Tropical Island?

What makes an island ‘tropical’? It meets the following criteria.

  • Located within 30 degrees North or South of the equator
  • Receives direct sunlight consistently throughout the year
  • Experiences high temperatures
  • High precipitation
  • Humid
  • Rainy and dry seasons

The areas between the equator and the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn are all part of the tropical zone. The latitude ranges from 30 degrees north and south of the equator.

The tropical zone can be divided into three geographical regions:

  • Tropical rainforest
  • Tropical monsoon
  • Tropical wet and dry

All three tropical regions can be found in these parts of the world:

  • Central America
  • South America
  • Africa
  • Southeast Asia

What Can I Expect To Find On A Tropical Island?

The first thing you will notice about a tropical island is the warm temperatures and the humidity. But what else should you expect to encounter on a tropical island?

Well, for starters, how about the beautiful beaches featuring white sands and aquamarine waters? This is probably the biggest attraction that tropical islands hold for tourists.

If you’re into snorkeling or scuba diving, you might encounter:

  • Beautiful fish in all colors
  • Coral reefs
  • Sea grasses
  • Deep sea trenches

But tropical islands aren’t just about the beaches. Depending on the island, tropical ecosystems can vary widely. You may find yourself visiting:

  • Rainforests
  • Open woodlands
  • Grass savannas
  • Freshwater lakes, streams, and rivers
  • Salt marshes and mudflats
  • Mangrove forests
  • Coastal littoral forests

There is no end to the new things you will discover on your tropical island vacation. In addition, to the varied geographical regions, you will find yourself surrounded by plant life in vivid colors and unthinkable shapes and sizes.

Unique wildlife exists on tropical islands, many that remain hidden, but some make themselves known to lucky tourists. Wildlife that can be found on my tropical islands includes:

  • Lizards
  • Snakes
  • Spiders
  • Monkeys
  • Exotic birds
  • Feral pigs
  • Sloths
  • Big cats (such as Jaguars)

You will experience cuisine authentic to the island. Seafood is accessible and abundant. Fresh fruit is available in most markets and restaurants as is freshly squeezed juice.
